Rancho
Santa Fe Homes
What makes Rancho
Santa Fe homes so special and unique? There are
some of the more obvious points, such as the lot size,
the landscaping, rolling hills, the rules of the Covenant.
But perhaps there's more. Rancho Santa Fe homes have
a special feeling, one that fits the lifestyle of the
residents of this quaint tucked away area in San Diego
County. Four miles east of the Pacific Ocean and 25
minutes north of the city of San Diego, the Covenant
of Rancho Santa Fe and its surrounding communities maintain
a quaint country atmosphere, yet offer some of the most
extraordinary residences in the United States. Related

Local Information
Rancho Santa Fe Real Estate |
Rancho Santa Fe is a country community
offering a magnificent rural environment unlike anything found
in California! When someone living in Texas says they want
a French chateau, that style is really not appropriate for
that climate for so many reasons. The same may be said for
storm cellars in Rancho Santa Fe (not including wine cellars)
The houses in Rancho Santa Fe range
from brand new sprawling estates to one of a kind craftsman
classic homes from the 1920's. The increase in “million-dollar”
homes is a combination of the caliber of homes built in the
last decade and the rising value of existing homes.
Rancho Santa Fe is not a typical modern
suburb. It is a collection of custom homes and extensive grounds
which reflect slow growth over many decades. Houses range
from brand new sprawling estates to one of a kind craftsman
classic homes from the 1920's. What a long way the area has
come in 80 years! The area now has about 4,800 residents,
and has a distinct style with its own architectural personality.
Many of the estates feature:
- Horse facilities - many residents
in the area enjoy riding and keeping horses
- Fenced grounds - most of the estates
are fenced off, with gates at the entrance.
- Lush landscaping - Landscaping is
pretty mature on most properties, even if the structures
are new or rebuilt. Many trees in the area were planted
80 years ago.
- Private golf on the grounds - Since
many properties sit on several acres of land, there is even
room for a putting green or two.
- Lots of privacy and seclusion -
because of the mature trees and the winding roads in the
area, one has the feeling of being in the country.
The Village - The
influence of architect Lillian Rice can still be seen throughout
the village today on main streets such as Paseo Delicas
and La Flecha. Her philosophy in architecture was to create
unity between buildings and their surrounding in a simplistic
blend of picturesque romantic charm in the mission Spanish
style. Born in 1888 Lillian Rice worked from 1920 to 1930
designing, supervising, and constructing the village, as
well as some housing throughout the Ranch.
The Covenant - The
Covenant covers a wider area than the village itself, and
protects the Ranch through the articles of the written covenant
which places many restrictions and requirements on development
to retain the original flavor and charm designed by Lillian
Rice.
Fairbanks Ranch
- A series of gated communities - Fairbanks Ranch was named
for Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Fairbanks Ranch is one of San
Diego County's most exclusive, private residential communities.
The houses in Fairbanks Ranch are architectural showcases
ranging from 2,500 to 20,000 square feet. Privacy and safety
are assured by 24-hour gate-guarded access and security
patrol.
New developments to the east
- These include the exclusive developments the Bridges and
Bing Crosby Estates. Property in the Bridges runs from about
$3 to $10 million, plus the club and homeowners fees. Lots
in the Estate area, for example, provide sufficient area
to accommodate even large estates and expansive grounds,
as much as two acres. Sites within the Grove area are carved
out of orange groves, with the surround trees maintained
by the homeowners' association.
Other Neighborhood developments
in the area now include Rancho Del Rio, San Diegueno Hills,
Santa Fe Vista, Rancho Del Lago, Rancho LaCima, Del Rayo Estates,
Del Rayo Downs, South Point Farms, Hacienda Santa Fe, Santa
Fe Valley, Fairbanks Polo Club, Morgan Run, Spyglass Hill,
Santa Fe Sur, Rancho Valencia, The Summit, and the Del Mar
Country Club.
